Here is a teensy-weensy bit of physics that explains how the universe came to be, and that points to there being a “Mind” behind it all… which has rather a lot of relevance for you.
The ‘strong nuclear force’ is the force that holds atoms together. This force had to be exactly right to allow a small part of its mass to be converted into energy. If the amount of matter converted were slightly smaller, the universe would consist only of hydrogen. If the amount of matter converted were slightly bigger, nuclear fusion would occur so quickly that no hydrogen would remain, and no galaxies, stars, or planets could be formed.
Here’s another number: The ratio of electrons to protons must be finely balanced to the degree of one part in 10 to the power of 37 (that’s 1 with thirty-seven 0s after it… which is HUGE!). If this fundamental constant were any larger or smaller, electromagnetism would dominate gravity, preventing the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets.
The fine-tuning surrounding the ‘big bang’ that began the universe is also impressive. The radiation left over from the big bang is referred to as the ‘cosmic microwave background.’ It is responsible for warming the universe 2.725°C above absolute zero. Absolute zero is minus 273.15°C. The radiation is detectable in space at one part in 100,000. If this number were any smaller, the universe would exist only as a collection of gas. No galaxies, stars, or planets would exist. Conversely, if the number were any bigger, the universe would only consist of large black holes.
Now, let’s get to some really big numbers—if they weren’t big enough already!
The rate at which the universe expands had to be finely tuned to one part in 10 to the power of 55 (that’s 1 followed by fifty-five 0s). If the universe had expanded any faster, matter would expand too quickly for stars, planets and galaxies to form. If the universe had expanded any slower, the universe would have collapsed before any stars could form.
Finally, here’s a monster number: The mass density of the universe is finely balanced to permit life to a degree of one part in 10 to the power of 59. If the universe were slightly more massive, an overabundance of deuterium from the big bang would cause stars to burn too rapidly for the formation of complex life. If the universe were slightly less massive, a lack of helium would result in a shortage of the heavy elements necessary for life to develop.
I hope this blows your mind!
What does this mean?
It means this: An atheist has to look at these extraordinary numbers, shrug their shoulders and say they are of no significance—which is ridiculously irrational. All the evidence suggests that the universe is very precisely made to allow life to exist. This points to the existence of a “Mind.” Nothing in our human experience (or scientific studies) can explain the existence of anything so extraordinarily fine-tuned other than intelligence.
So, whilst atheists may claim they are rationalists, this is not so. They have to believe the impossible—that all these numbers were arrived at by chance, which is absurd.
It is much more reasonable to believe in the existence of ‘Mind.’ This means that those who seek the mind behind the universe are the true rationalists.
I invite you to be one of them.
